How Big Should Your Comedy Show Be? Picking the Right Lineup for Your Room

A short set, a 60-minute show and a full 90-minute showcase are different products with different budgets, energy and best uses. Here's how to size a comedy night, with guidance by room size and event type.

The first decision after "let's do a comedy night" is usually "how big a show?" and most planners answer it on budget alone. Budget matters, but the size of the show changes the whole feel of the night, and the smaller option isn't always the one that nets more or lands better. Here's how we help churches and organizations decide.

The three sizes

The short set (10 to 30 minutes). A sermon kickoff, a conference session, a men's or women's breakfast. One or two comedians from the ensemble, tightly written, in and out. Comedy is a segment, not the event.

The 60-minute show. A compact lineup, usually with a couples game or audience bit in the middle. Right for banquets where comedy follows dinner, couples nights with a program after, and rooms up to about 200 people.

The full showcase (75 to 90 minutes). The complete ensemble: an emcee, three or four comedians with progressively longer sets, and sketch or audience-participation segments between them. This is the Friday-night comedy night, the ticketed fundraiser, the outreach event where the comedy is the event.

Whichever you pick, you are booking Crosseyed Comedy. The specific comedians vary by date and region; the show is built for your room.

A rough guide by room size

AudienceRecommended size
Under 10045- to 60-minute show, compact lineup
100 to 20060-minute show, or the full showcase if it's the whole evening
200 to 500Full showcase: emcee + two or three comedians
500+Full showcase with sketch or game segment

A rough guide by event type

  • Sermon kickoff: Short set, 10 to 15 minutes. Always.
  • Couples night: 60-minute show with a couples game; the full showcase for a big room or a conference opener.
  • Fundraiser banquet: 40 minutes after dinner and before the ask.
  • Ticketed fundraiser show: Full showcase. "Four comedians" sells more tickets than "a comedian."
  • Outreach comedy night: Full showcase if the room allows; variety is what keeps guests through the close.
  • Men's or women's breakfast: Short set, 30 minutes.

The energy question

A full showcase has a rhythm: the emcee warms the room, each comedian builds on the last, and the headliner closes on a peak. There's a momentum you can't get from one voice, no matter how good. A shorter show has focus instead: one or two points of view, deep rather than wide, and it leaves room in the evening for whatever else you have planned. Neither is better. Match it to what you want the room to feel like at 9:00 PM.

What it costs

Fees scale with the size of the show and the length of the set, though not linearly, and travel is quoted up front. A short set is the most affordable way to get professional comedy into your building; the full showcase costs more and, for a ticketed event, usually earns more back.
