How Much Does It Cost to Book Christian Comedians for a Church Event?

What drives the price of a Christian comedy show, how churches budget for it, and five ways to cover the fee, from love offerings to sponsors, so a comedy night fits a church budget.

It's usually the first question on the call, and it's a fair one. A pastor wants to know whether a comedy night is a realistic idea before taking it to the board, and a committee wants a number before they plan anything around it.

The honest answer is that there isn't one price, because there isn't one kind of show. A ten-minute sermon kickoff and a ninety-minute Friday-night showcase with a full lineup are different products. What we can do is show you exactly what moves the price, how other churches budget for it, and the ways most of them end up covering the fee without touching the general fund.

What actually drives the price

Five things account for nearly every difference between one quote and another.

1. The length and size of the show. A short set for a sermon kickoff or a men's breakfast is the most affordable way to bring professional comedy into your church. A 60-minute show sits in the middle. The full showcase, with an emcee and several comedians, costs the most and, for a ticketed event, usually earns the most back. (How big should your comedy show be? walks through which size fits which room.)

2. The date. Friday and Saturday nights in the fall, the weeks before Christmas and Valentine's weekend are the most requested dates of the year. Weeknights, Sunday afternoons and January through March are easier to book and often less expensive.

3. Travel. Crosseyed Comedy is based in the Phoenix area, so churches in the Valley have no travel costs. For the rest of Arizona and out-of-state dates, mileage or flights and a hotel are part of the quote, spelled out up front.

4. Lead time. Booking well ahead gives you the widest choice of dates and the most room to plan the event around the show. Last-minute dates can work, but there's less flexibility.

5. Combining events. If we're already traveling to your area, a Saturday comedy night paired with a Sunday-morning sermon kickoff, or two churches in the same city on back-to-back nights, spreads the travel costs and lowers the price for everyone.

What's included in a Crosseyed Comedy quote

When you compare quotes, compare what's in them. Ours includes:

  • The comedians and emcee for the format you choose, booked as one group with one point of contact
  • A show that's 100% clean, written for adults and safe for every generation in the room
  • A promotional kit: a short video clip, graphics and ready-to-use announcement text
  • Planning help, including our Plan your event checklist and printable guide
  • Travel, if any, quoted in the same number
  • A simple agreement with your date confirmed in writing

What you provide is the room, a microphone, a light on the stage and the audience. If you're not sure your space is ready, here's how to set up your church for a great comedy night.

Five ways churches cover the fee

Very few churches pay for a comedy night out of the general budget. These are the approaches we see most often, and many churches combine two or three.

1. Sell tickets

For a community-wide show, modest ticket prices often cover the fee and the costs of the evening, with something left over. Price for your community, not for the comedians: a full room at a friendly price beats a half-empty room at a high one. A family price or a small-group "table of eight" price helps fill seats.

2. Take a love offering

For an outreach night where you want the door wide open, keep admission free and take a love offering during the evening. Guests who had a great time are generous, and members who invited friends usually give with a little extra joy.

3. Find a sponsor or two

Local businesses run by members of your congregation are often glad to underwrite a community event in exchange for a thank-you from the stage and their name on the screen. One or two sponsors can cover a large share of the fee.

4. Use a ministry budget that already exists

Outreach, marriage ministry, men's and women's ministry, youth, staff and volunteer appreciation: a comedy night fits naturally into several budgets that are already set aside for events. A couples night can come out of the marriage ministry line; a volunteer thank-you night out of appreciation.

5. Make it a fundraiser

If your church, school or mission has a goal, a ticketed comedy show can raise money rather than spend it. We've written a whole guide on how to run a comedy night fundraiser, including how to price tickets, sell sponsorships and time the ask.

Questions to ask any comedy group before you book

Whoever you hire, a few questions protect your budget and your evening:

  • Is the quote all-in? Ask whether travel, lodging and any sound needs are included.
  • Is the material clean, or "mostly clean"? Ask to see a full set, not just a highlight reel. (Here's how to tell the difference.)
  • Who is my contact, and how quickly do they respond? Planning goes smoothly when one person answers your questions.
  • What happens if something changes? Weather, illness and schedule changes happen. Know the plan before you sign.
  • Can you help us promote it? A good partner wants your room full as much as you do.

Is it worth it?

Most churches that book a comedy night measure it against what they already spend on events: the cost per guest, the number of first-time visitors, and how many people are still talking about it a month later. A comedy night is one of the easiest invitations your members will ever make, and it gives first-time guests a picture of your church they won't forget.
